The uniform includes Adrain’s dark navy blue wool U.S. Navy uniform, consisting of the sailor jacket or jumper and matching trousers; his original heavy canvas duffel bag; and a digitized copy of his period photograph from our family album. The photograph shown with this listing may be kept with the collection and used for future public display if the new owner wishes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost wonderfully, this is not an anonymous uniform. Adrain’s name appears on all three surviving textile pieces. His name is stamped inside the jacket, appears again on a handwritten fabric label attached inside the trousers, and is stamped on his canvas duffel bag. These pieces have an unusually personal provenance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dark navy wool uniform has the traditional broad sailor collar with three rows of gold tape, embroidered stars at the corners, matching striped cuffs, and broadfall trousers fastened with numerous black anchor buttons. The trousers retain the sharp, complicated original broadfall construction, visible in the photographs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rating badge on the upper sleeve is historically important. It consists of a white spread eagle above crossed cannon and three scarlet chevrons. The three chevrons identify a Petty Officer First Class, while the crossed cannon identify his rating as Gunner’s Mate, making Adrain a Gunner’s Mate First Class. Gunner’s Mate is a very early U.S. Navy rating, established in 1797, and the crossed-cannon specialty mark was introduced in 1866.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom my recent research: The position of that badge also helps to identify the date. Before 1913, the sleeve on which a petty officer wore his rating badge could depend upon his assigned watch. The Navy Uniform Regulations of January 25, 1913 changed this arrangement. Members of the Seaman Branch, which included Gunner’s Mates, thereafter wore their rating badges on the right sleeve, while most other petty officers wore theirs on the left. Adrain’s Gunner’s Mate badge is on the right arm, exactly where it should appear under the regulations in force during World War I. It is my understanding that he was enlisted between 1917 to 1919.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI should add that I am far from a military expert. I have researched this uniform as carefully as I can, using U.S. Navy historical and uniform sources, and this is the information I have found. There is extensive overall soiling and staining, inside and out, with particularly heavy staining and dark marks on the bottom, all clearly photographed. The canvas shows considerable use and the original ropes are also quite worn. There is a pocket on the 'front' of the Navy issued duffel bag.
