Every antique has survived because someone valued it enough to keep it.  

This nearly 200 year old antique pewter teapot has done just that. Dating to the late Regency period, about 1830, it comes from a long-held family estate.

When I lifted the lid, I found an unexpected surprise tucked inside. A beautiful Victorian calling card, dating to about 1880, bearing the name Minnie Hagelberger, had rested there for generations. Discoveries like this often suggest that an object was cherished and passed from one generation to the next, perhaps inherited from a beloved family member or received as a treasured gift from an older friend.  Minnie's calling card reminds us that this was once someone's treasured possession, long before it became an antique.

The teapot features a rounded spun hollowware body that tapers gracefully to a flared pedestal foot. Its elegant goose-neck spout is balanced by a generously proportioned hollow C-scroll handle, while the domed hinged lid is topped with a simple stepped button finial. Fine hand-soldered seams and the subtle irregularities expected of handmade work remain visible throughout, preserving the character of this early 19th-century vessel. The mellow pewter surface has developed a soft gray patina through nearly two centuries of age and careful use.

Again, the teapot itself is entirely handmade.  Its graceful silhouette, subtle irregularities, and mellow pot-marked patina immediately identify it as early 19th-century craftsmanship rather than later Victorian factory production. A hand-etched inventory number, "08791," remains on the underside, almost certainly added during the teapot's long life as part of an estate or collection inventory.. No maker's marks are evident.

This lovely teapot with its romantic backstory is destined to be enjoyed once again.  Oh! If only we could meet the woman who first carried it home nearly 200 years ago.

Condition

Overall excellent antique condition consistent with age at nearly 200 years old. The teapot retains its original naturally aged patina with minor irregularities associated with early handmade construction.  It has not been polished. There are pot marks and soft dents or irregurities from the time of manufacture and use from so long ago. The scratched mark on the bottom is legible and likely from the original maker in my opinion. The Victorian calling card remains with the teapot as found. The front decorative portion of the card has become detached over time and can be easily reattached with archival-quality adhesive if desired.

Suitable as a decorative display piece. If a buyer wishes to use it for serving, modern testing for food safety is recommended before doing so.
