Vintage 1940s Silk Magnolia Millinery Trims with Ivory Ostrich Plume *Free Shipping

Luminous and elegant, this 1940s millinery trim grouping includes two hand-sculpted silk magnolia stems and a coordinating ivory ostrich plume.

These pieces were probably created for a large, wide-brimmed hat, although they may also have been intended for a bridal arrangement.

Each silk petal was individually cut, shaped, curled, and crimped by hand. The delicate stamens were dipped in tinted plaster and gathered around carefully molded centers.

The leaves were also cut and shaped by hand, then wired and washed with layered dyes resembling watercolor. Both floral stems remain flexible and can be carefully adjusted or mounted onto a hat or bouquet frame.

The soft patina of the 1940s materials could only have been created by time. They do look vintage and will be perfect for your vintage fashion ensemble.

This set includes three pieces:

One large floral stem with two magnolia blossoms measuring approximately 6 inches across, ten smaller blossoms, and three finished leaves.

One smaller floral stem with eight petite blossoms and one silk leaf.

One matching ivory ostrich plume, beautifully shaped and light as air.

Because of their delicacy, the flowers and feather will be carefully packed and shipped in a large box rather than a padded envelope.

Condition

Excellent overall. There are no stains, holes, or storage odors. The silk is soft, clean, and luxurious, with the lovely patina expected from pieces created more than eighty years ago.

Measurements

The large floral stem measures approximately 15⅛ inches (38.4 cm) long and just over 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide. Its two largest magnolias each measure approximately 6 inches (15.2 cm) across.

The smaller floral stem measures approximately 11 inches (28 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide.

Provenance

These pieces came from an estate that I purchased many years ago. Since then, they have been part of my personal collection of antique and vintage millinery arts and carefully stored in archival boxes and tissues.
