Antique Rare Edwardian Cabinet Photograph of a Child with Dolls at a Bohemian Spa, Dated 1907, As Seen In "Juicy History"
As seen in Juicy History. This Edwardian cabinet portrait shows a prosperous but sadly unidentified family posed outdoors during a stay in the spa town of Bad Schlag, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The photograph was taken by the professional studio of Franz Blaschke, photographer, whose printed credit appears on the verso. A carefully handwritten inscription dates the photograph to 27 October 1907.
Bad Schlag was one of many Central European spa towns where families traveled at the turn of the early twentieth century for fresh air, rest, and the restorative culture of taking the waters. Such visits often included formal souvenir photographs, intended to mark both the journey and the family’s presence there.
Two uniformed governesses stand with the group, each holding her handwork for the camera, one knitting, the other tatting. At center, the child presents her dolls: a finely dressed bisque-headed doll, and a large Victorian-era chinahead in the Frozen Charlotte style. By 1907, the chinahead already belonged to an earlier generation and were often kept as cherished possessions or family heirlooms. A wicker pram, brought along for the child’s use, reflects the family’s attention to her comfort in every detail even while traveling.
Condition
The cabinet card is in excellent condition, near mint, with only minor surface scratches consistent with gentle handling over time. The image remains strong and clear.
