Dated 27 October 1907, this beautifully preserved Edwardian cabinet photograph records a family during a visit to the spa town of Bad Schlag. It was taken by the professional studio of Franz Blaschke, whose printed credit appears on the reverse, and is accompanied by a contemporary handwritten inscription which dates the photograph.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Central European spa towns were popular destinations for families seeking fresh air and the restorative waters. Formal souvenir photographs such as this became lasting reminders of those visits.  This is an especially elaborate family portrait and it would have been costly.

It is a most delightful image!  Two governesses stand at either side of the family, one holding her knitting and the other her tatting. At the center, a young child proudly displays her two dolls: a finely dressed bisque-headed doll and a large china doll in the Frozen Charlotte style. Beside her rests a wicker pram, brought along for this well-to-do family holiday. 

Although the identities of those pictured have been lost, the photograph preserves an unusually vivid record of wealthy Edwardian family life.

Condition

Excellent condition, bordering on near mint. Minor surface scratches consistent with careful handling over time. The image remains sharp, clear, and well preserved.
