By the 1920s, Verne’s great adventure novels had become favorites of younger readers as well as adults, and this lavishly illustrated Scribner edition was perfectly suited to the family library.

First published in 1876, Michael Strogoff is unusual among Verne’s best-known novels in that it is not science fiction. This handsome 1927 Charles Scribner’s Sons volume is First Edition Thus, that is, the first edition illustrated by N. C. Wyeth, one of the great American illustrators of the Golden Age.

Wyeth famously created nine full-page color plates for the book, filled with galloping horses, soldiers, dramatic landscapes, danger, and passion. All nine lithographs are present and remain bright. This volume also has pictorial endpapers and is printed on deckle-edged paper, characteristic of fine book production of the period.

Bound in black cloth-covered boards with a mounted color illustration on the front cover and gilt lettering to the spine. The true 1927 Scribner colophon appears on the copyright page. 397 pages. Considered scarce, this is an attractive and well-preserved collector’s copy.

Condition

Very Good. Strong, tight binding with good hinges. Foxing is present on the first few pages, including the title page, with only occasional very light speckles of foxing on a few pages thereafter. The text remains clean and crisp, and all nine color illustrations are bright. The mounted illustration on the front cover has a scratch, and the gilt spine lettering has slight fading from shelf wear. No names, inscriptions, or other markings. No dust jacket.
