Rare Boxed Pair of French-Curled Ostrich Plumes, Free Shipping

This exceptionally rare pair of French-curled ostrich plumes survives exactly as they were sold more than 140 years ago...preserved in the original Victorian millinery box. The feathers have not been disturbed. They are still perfectly wired and ready for application just as they were sold to milliery shops so long ago. Untouched boxed sets of feathers of this quality are impossible to find today.

During the late nineteenth century, ostrich plumes ranked among the most coveted materials in fashionable dress. Reserved for fine millinery, they adorned elegant day hats, mourning bonnets, and couture creations where movement and craftsmanship were as important as color or form.

These matching plumes are finished in what was then called the French Curl style. Every stage of their preparation required specialized skill. The feathers were cleaned, dyed, steamed, curled, and wired by hand before being sold to professional milliners.  These are in their original box and this set is perfect for any museum fashion history display.

Unlike many exotic feathers fashionable during the period, ostrich plumes were harvested without killing the birds. 

The survival of the original millinery box is beyond remarkable. Hand-constructed of heavy cardboard with wooden reinforcements, it was specifically designed to protect the delicate curl and shape of the feathers during storage and transport. Today the box forms an important part of the object's history, preserving not only the plumes themselves but also the way they were originally presented within the Victorian millinery trade.

Condition

Plumes: Excellent condition, bordering on near mint. Unused. The feathers remain supple, vibrant, and securely wired with their original millinery bindings. No fading or feather loss observed.

Original Box: Good antique condition. Structurally intact with expected age-related wear, slightly bent with minor losses, and edge wear consistent with careful preservation over more than a century. An important and increasingly scarce survival in its own right. Please refer to photographs attached.
